PRAYER LETTER FOR APRIL, 2008

Sunday, May 11, 2008
Dear Pastors and Churches:
“All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen” (Titus 3:15).
We send to all of you our warmest greetings along with our appreciation for your faithfulness to Christ and the Great Commission.  May God bless each of you according to His will!
Meetings, Conferences and Prisoners:  Besides our regular weekly meetings held here in Bocsa and in Filiasi, we are involved in making mission trips and holding meetings in other cities.  There will be meetings in Cluj-Napoca 4 evenings this week, Lord willing.  Cluj is about a six-hour drive north and east of our little city of Bocsa.  There is one family there that is convinced of the doctrine of grace and others who are interested in learning about grace and true Churches.  Brother Mircea, the host of the Cluj meetings, will have an opportunity to preach the gospel on Friday night to those gathered at the local synagogue in Cluj.  Pray for this brother, as he tries to witness to the Jews and others in his area using our literature.
As the Lord enables us financially we need to hold meetings in Rosiori de Vede in the immediate future. In that city is a brother and his family who have already written a letter to the Baptist Union stating that they wanted to be dropped from membership. He preaches and witnesses to many in that city.
A stop also needs to be made near Alexandria where there is a former inmate who gives real evidence of conversion.  We have many contacts with men confined to prisons in Romania.  I have written little or nothing about this part of our ministry because generally we see no evidence of regeneration when we hear from prison inmates.  Usually they want money, clothes or something.  But this man is different. He is now free and is working regularly and is distributing our literature and witnessing to the power of Christ to save.  Both Rosiori de Vede and Alexandria are located in the south-central part of the country.
It is time also to visit again and teach the 8 brothers in Brailia County far to the east.  By driving first to Filiasi and preaching and visiting there the trip is partway complete.  Then it will be possible, without backtracking, to go on to Rosiori de Vede and Alexandria, holding meetings before going on to Brailia County for more meetings.  This will take about 2 weeks and means dismissing one weekend of meetings here in Bocsa, but it is necessary that these visits be made.  Please pray for the grace needed to travel and hold these meetings.  We recognize our need for grace as the work here continues to grow.  Pray, please!
Literature:  As usual we continue to work on new materials to be published.  We are glad to report that we have been able to catch-up, for the most part, on those tracts and booklets that were out of print.
Medical:  Janet and I are about the same, health-wise.  My hemoglobin last week was at 8.5.  This is well below normal which is between 13 -18, I believe.  However it is not low enough to receive blood so a trip to Budapest, Hungary has not been necessary.  So we rejoice that my bone marrow seems to be making a least some hemoglobin.  Thank you for your prayers regarding this matter - - please keep praying!
Ecumenical "Evangelism":  Roman Catholics, Romanian Orthodox, Pentecostals, Charismatics, Plymouth Brethren, other protestants and the Romanian Baptist Union churches are all cooperating as they get ready for “the greatest evangelical event” – a Franklin Graham “Evangelistic Festival” to be held in Timisoara July 4 – 8 this summer.  Romanian Baptists have been told that Billy Graham is the greatest of American Baptists.  So, his son, Franklin, will be here to get’em down the aisles!  There is to be a 1,000 voice children’s choir, a 3,000 voice adult choir, etc.  The “personal workers” are being trained and all Baptist Union churches are obligated to participate.  How sad!  Only a remnant here in Romania are daring to refuse to participate in this false-gospel-step toward a one-world-church.
Get Acquainted With Romania:  Aurel, Raul and I were in our “county seat” city of Resita last week.  Traffic was held up by the police who were escorting a parade down the principal street.  The parade was led by a loud brass band or “fanfara.”  Next came several groups of boys and girls and teenagers all decked out in their traditional or national costumes.  These costumes vary in colors and styles somewhat depending on where the wearer is from.  One of the costumed groups was a group of “Rromi.” These people are called in the Romanian language “Tigani” but known the world over as Gypsies.  Following them was a Gypsy band playing their own style of music.  There was another band or two, but at the last was a group of about 8 or 10 young men dressed in skins with their faces masked.  They were all chained to a common iron ring and at the intersections they would stop and two of the masked, fur-coated young men who held large clubs would chase the others.  The ones being chased represented “bears.”  Those doing the chasing probably represented shepherds.  They ran around and around in a circle, the iron ring being in the center.  Around the waists of the “bears” were heavy leather belts and large rusty cowbells of an ancient vintage.  The noise was loud and the dancing/chasing continued for several minutes at each stop.  Probably until some years ago, real bears “danced” in a ring chained together being chased by their captors.  You may remember that Romanians were, at one time, famous for their dancing bears.  Customs live on!
As always I am out of space before I am out of things to say.  Our hearts are encouraged by your cards and letters, your interest in the work here, your regular and special financial gifts – and obviously, most especially your earnest prayers on our behalf.  Thank you for standing with us!  Please keep us in your prayers!  As each of us does his or her part, we shall together carry out the great commission here in Romania.
In the cause of God and truth with you,
    Curtis and Janet Pugh
