PRAYER LETTER FOR DECEMBER, 2008

Monday, January 12, 2009
Dear Pastors and Churches:
“All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen” (Titus 3:15).
We often get from our Romanian Brethren a request to send greetings to those in America who stand with us.  Gratitude and love springs from all our hearts for all that you do for us in holding the rope, humanly speaking, for this work!  And so we do extend our heartfelt greetings to all of you – from Janet and me and from all those with us.
Conference:  As I write we are preparing for our 2nd annual Bible conference here in Bocsa.  It is to be held on Thursday, the 15th of January.  We are expecting between 20 and 26 persons to be in attendance – with perhaps as many as 3 ladies this time.  Some people will be traveling almost across the whole length of the country by train.  A fewer number will be coming from the Northeast part by car.  We have very limited facilities otherwise we could have extended the size of the conference.  We have had to purchase additional stack chairs in order to have seating.  Raul and Aurel will be giving up their beds in order to provide for our guests.  This year’s conference has twin themes: Human Accountability in Light of Sovereign Grace and Evangelism in Light of Sovereign Grace.  We know these are big themes, but ones we believe the Brothers need to hear about from the Scriptures.
Filiasi:  Attendance at the Filiasi meetings has been consistent with one new couple continuing to come faithfully – even in the very cold weather we have been having.  (“Global warming” is giving Europe the coldest Winter in many years, according to the news).  Some of the people attending have been hurt by the betrayal and compromise they have observed in people in whom they held in high esteem.  We are preaching the truth in love and trying to be useful to Christ so that the Balm of Gilead may sooth and heal their wounds. Unrelated to this, a few months ago it was necessary to exclude one member, but we are glad to report that the excluded man’s father and mother continue faithfully attending the meetings in Filiasi.
Bocsa:  Illnesses have kept our attendance down since our last writing.  Several have had really bad colds and these seem to be recurring.  Raul’s grandmother recently attended the outdoor funeral of a brother-in-law in a nearby village.  Having to walk almost a mile to the home where the funeral was held in front of the house, and then walking back the same distance to the home of her sister in sub-zero temperatures was not good for her health and she is slow in recovery.  (She did not go to the graveside service.)  She is quite spry to be in her 80’s and usually faithful.  Please remember to pray for her.
Car Repair:  We have been able to make some of the needed car repairs and are thankful to have been able to pay a thousand dollars on the account as we projected doing in last month’s letter.  We have also been able to purchase additional needed parts.  The broken-up pavement and other jolts and bumps continue to be hard on vehicles.
Travel:  Again we wish to request your prayers on behalf of all those who travel in the Lord’s work here in Romania.  Romania is listed as being among the highest in highway deaths in all of Europe.  More and more cars and trucks crowd the highways here and still the government refuses to institute roving radar units.  There is practically no police presence at all except occasionally stationary radar in villages and towns.  So in rural areas many people drive without any regard to safe rules of the road.   Passing when there is oncoming traffic and forcing their way back into the line of traffic seems to be the biggest cause of wrecks.  On our last trip to Filiasi we observed 4 wrecked cars along the highway - one with two bodies covered with coats and blankets awaiting transportation from the scene.
Gifts:  Special thanks to dear friends in North Carolina for the financial gifts for Janet’s and my recent birthdays.  The gifts were sent earlier, but because of our monthly financial system, were only made available to us the first of this month.  To those who send us e-mails, online bulletins, letters and cards from time to time, we are especially appreciative.  Good news from home is always welcome – and we take seriously the prayer requests that come our way, not only praying for the needs represented, but also forwarding them on to others whom we know will pray also.
I am about out of space again!  Your standing with us is vital – the Lord’s way of getting His work done!  We are very thankful for your prayers and urge you to continue praying for us and for the work here!  The need is great!
In the cause of God and truth with you,
    Curtis and Janet Pugh
