PRAYER LETTER FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY, 2001

Wednesday, February 14, 2001
Dear Pastors and Churches:

“I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me” (Psalms 57:2)

Oh what a salvation God has provided for us!  It is His delight to “perform”, that is, to do for His own all things needful in saving and keeping His people.  What wisdom and what grace!  As I begin to write this letter I am mindful of several who will receive this who are in difficult situations due to health
problems.  Janet and I can certainly sympathize with you.  We have learned and are learning what it means to suffer physically, leaning only on Him for needs no one else can meet.  May God supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Janet and I are bringing our packing to a close now, expecting to arrive back in Romania next week (February 24th.)  I am taking a considerable number of books back with us – materials that will be needed in preparing some lessons for the Berea School of the Bible in the Romanian language as well as materials to be translated, printed and distributed.  We have enjoyed great fellowship here and will miss our loved ones, but believe God would have us in Romania and involved in the work there.
We have been given an opportunity to be involved in an additional area of help to Romanian
Brethren.  I have been contacted this week by a Baptist Brother who, along with another, are interested in helping financially in Romania.  They desire for me to channel funds from them to needy areas in Romania. They are particularly interested in helping in the construction of Baptist meeting houses in various villages where Churches are involved in starting Churches.  They are also interested in supplying some funds for feeding hungry people in our area.  They are sending along $1,000 for this purpose as an initial gift.  It is not known how much will be sent after this or how regularly, it may be on a monthly basis or less often.  They have stated that others are certainly welcome to participate in this area of help.  I know there are needs everywhere and that people are hungry and doing without in many places.  I ask only that you pray and do what God lays on your hearts regarding this aspect of Christian charity towards those with so little.  We will do our best to see that these funds are distributed wisely.  They will go directly to those designated areas of need in Romania.  If you wish to participate, send your gifts to Berea Baptist Church and plainly mark them for the ROMANIAN BENEVOLENT FUND.  It is NOT our purpose to make Romanian Baptists dependent on outside help, but to help them in destitute places as
Baptists have historically and Biblically done, so that they can go forward on their own.  Village meeting houses can be constructed for about $7,000 each, I believe.  They are plain and simple, but functional.
While neither Janet nor I are fully recovered, I am almost “back to normal” and Janet continues to
improve, albeit slowly.  She still suffers seriously from much dizziness at times.  She tires easily, also.  As indicated previously, it will be necessary for us to temporarily hire some part time help to keep the housework done if I am to have sufficient time available to look after the translation work and readying materials for the Berea School of the Bible, as well as preaching.  (Janet also will be working on English lessons and children's and women's materials).  Also, we are aware that our learning of the language will be an ongoing thing.  We have thus far studied all aspects of Romanian grammar.  Now we need to increase our vocabulary and learn to use all the idioms common to the language.  This can be done best, we believe, in daily contact with the people, so having a Romanian working with us will be an asset.
Our hearts are filled with gratitude and expectation.  Gratitude for all that God has done for us, first of all, in giving us spiritual life by His free grace.  We are also grateful for His work in restoring us to the measure of health we enjoy.  With excitement we look forward to being back in Romania and the work there.  There is so much we want to see done there.  There are many areas without Churches.  Preachers and other leaders need to be trained.  All over Romania (and surrounding countries with Romanian speakers) there is a need for sound doctrinal teaching.  We believe this need can best be met through sound literature.  May God give us grace to stand in the gap in this part of the world.  And to you, our Brothers and Sisters, who labor with us by prayer and giving, and thus enable us to go, we wish to express our gratitude and thanksgiving.  We know that you desire that all glory go to our Father and so we praise Him first and foremost, but we also would be in error if we were not appreciative to you for your part in this work.  THANK YOU!  And may God bless you in this life and reward you greatly in the next for your faithfulness.
Pray for the Pughs, please!
In the cause of God and truth,
    Curtis and Janet Pugh
