PRAYER LETTER FOR JANUARY, 2003
Saturday, February 05, 2003
Dear Pastors and Churches:
Greetings to those
"... that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 1 :1).
We learn that at all times, in distress, grief, disappointment and joy, it is this gift of precious saving faith; worked in us by God and not of our own manufacture; which sustains us. Praise the Lord for His work in us!
January has been a cold and snowy month here in our part of Romania, but has not been as bad here as else where in Romania. We have had snow on the ground for more than a month now. In other parts of Romania, we hear, many roads, even national highways are blocked due to heavy snows.
Since our last letter we have sent out 58 sets of the CDs we distribute along with a minimum of 8 pieces of literature. This means the Bible study program, Gill, Spurgeon, as well as articles by Baptist Elders with whom we all are familiar and in agreement have gone out to Romanians in Moldova, Romania, Spain, Canada and even two to the U.S. The Romanian pieces we sent were: A Brick Wall for Arminians, Is God a Failure?, Was Your Name Written in the Book of Life From Before the Foundation of the World?, The Biblical Doctrine of Election (C.D. Cole), Born Againism, Was Judas Really Saved?, Should a Christian Celebrate Christmas?, and What is a New Testament Church? We also shipped out our last copies of The Trail of Blood and so must print this again. Pastors received additional books including Elemental Eschatology, Here Comes The Bride, The Biblical and Historical Faith of the Baptists, Scriptural Church Organization and others.
We heard about a sovereign grace Hungarian Baptist pastor in Romania and met with him for more than two hours in January. He is solidly sovereign grace and seemed to be a good Brother. He resigned his largest church because of their lack of concern with worldliness two years ago and left the Baptist Union a year ago. Two smaller churches came out with him and he is starting a third. He is a well educated Brother, speaking German, English, Romanian and Hungarian Being part German blood, he could move to Germany where the living is easier but stays; in Romania to minister here. We gave to him several sovereign grace books in both English and Romanian. As he indicated he is open to the truth about the Lord's Churches we gave him also J. T. Christian's History of the Baptists, Milbum Cockrell's Scriptural Church Organization and Here Comes The Bride and other things. Please pray for this Brother. We expect to have further contact with him in the days ahead.
In January I received a phone call asking me to come to Oltenia. Some Brethren there wanted to talk to me about their coming out of the Baptist Union. Five churches and missions are involved. Neither of the pastors or brothers there speaks English. Conversations went well and were quite lengthy. Oltenians use many regionalisms and are famous for speaking very rapidly, but I was able to understand most of what was said. I did require some translation in dealing with specific issues as the terms were unfamiliar and I wanted to be absolutely clear. The Plymouth Brethren have been sowing error there, but I believe my answers were Scriptural and satisfactory. We also took them literature for distribution and as they requested more Gospel tracts, we shipped two packages to them after our return home. Please pray for these pastors and brothers as they seek to follow the Lord.
The Bocsa mission has not yet a name. We use an old Romanian descriptive term "Adunarea Baptistilor" - "the meeting of the Baptists." We had perfect attendance from the 3 members and a total of 10 different visitors over the month. Two of the visitors, young men, continue to return each Lord's Day. We have had contact with all these over the past month and some who have not returned have said they wanted to return but had been hindered. We meet in our living quarters, but believe we would be wise to locate a house or space to rent in a more easily accessible location. Bocsa is made up of 4 villages put together under Communism to make one city of about 23,000. Two are right together and the other two have some "green space" between them making distances great. We live, in effect, at one end of the town and all of the visitors so far have come from the other end. Please pray about such a place to rent.
I also continue to preach in one Roman ian Christian Baptist church in a nearby village each Friday afternoon. So far, they like the preaching. I have been preaching on the church. This church was started in 1912 and is courageous in standing against the machinery of the organized Christian Baptists.
I must close now. To you who support us in prayer and finances we send our most sincere thanks and appreciation. Multumsec forte mult!(Thank you very much!)
Pray for the Pughs.
In the cause of God and truth,
