PRAYER LETTER FOR JUNE, 2007

Friday, July 13, 2007
Dear Pastors and Churches:

“All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen” (Titus 3:15).
It is a great joy to know that you stand with us as we seek to do the work set before us here!  Your cards, letters, and e-mails are most certainly appreciated!  Thank you for standing with us and for being so kind as to remember us in these ways from time to time.
Medical:  Really bad stiffness in my major joints and painful knots in various places – all seeming to worsen – caused my doctor and me to decide to take a ten-day round of Prednisolon.  I had not had any of this cortisteroid for more than 3 years as the side effects can be bad.  After the second day the stiffness and knots were gone and I am feeling great – for an old man!
Bocsa and Filiasi:  Attendance is holding steady in both places and that in spite of the severe heat wave that has griped the country.  We have had one college-age visitor in the Bocsa services since my last letter and also returning visitors.  Last Sunday evening in Filiasi there was one new visitor and 3 returning ones.  Here in Bocsa I have been bringing a variety of messages relating to salvation and Raul has been preaching on the great covenant of grace.
U.S. Trip:  Brother Raul and Brother Aurel had their visa interviews on the 10th of July and were refused visas.  It took the visa agents just 3 minutes to turn Aurel down and 5 minutes to turn down Raul.  We believe the interviews were unfair and Grace Baptist Church, Stanleyville, N.C. has asked the brothers to re-apply.  They have contacted their Senators and Representative and there is a complaint department at the U.S. Consulate in Bucharest.  So we are availing ourselves of these things – but most of all we ask for your prayers regarding this matter!  New interviews scheduled for August 1st – the earliest date possible.
Van Fund:  At the last time of writing we had received $14,000 toward a needed van.  While the money has not yet been deposited and so will show on a later financial report, another $1,000 has come in making the present total come to $15,000.  Due to high prices and the continued low value of the U.S. dollar, we estimate that we will need about $24,000 to purchase a good second-hand van with 9 seats.
Severe Heat Wave:  Much of Romania has been experiencing high temperatures in the last weeks.  We here in the Banat region have had a bit of relief in the last couple of days, but it has been bad with the temperature reaching 104 degrees F. in some places.  When we were in Bucharest for the visa interviews, the health authorities had set up tents in various locations for the treatment of people suffering seriously from the heat.  Also they had water coolers set up in lots of places so that people could get a cool drink of water.  The fact that many Romanians believe that breezes are dangerous to their health complicates matters as many will not ventilate their homes or apartments as we would.  Air conditioners are not unknown, but are expensive and so not very plentiful – and many consider them dangerous to their health like a breeze.  Our trip to Bucharest and back in a car without air conditioning was “interesting,” to say the least!
Russian Literature Project:  Banks make money!  Obviously.  We sent $500 advance to the brothers who are doing the translating of Tom Ross’ outline of T. P. Simmons.  It cost $40 to transfer the funds and the intermediate bank in New York took an additional $15.  So we must consider that it will cost about $2,000 or so to get the $1,900 payment to the translators in the Republic of Moldova.  We have received a price on printing and binding these books in similar fashion as the original ones.  It will cost almost $500 to print 100 of these for pastors in Siberia.  Plus it will cost at least $55 to get the funds to Siberia.  So, we need a total of about $2,600 for the entire project.  Please pray about this project.  We will probably print and bind some in Russian here also for distribution in the Ukraine.  The financial report on the back of this letter shows what funds have come in for this translation and printing project.  After the next deposit (next month) we will have $710.00 on hand toward the needed $2,600.00 or so.  We have heard from some brothers in Siberia and they are anxious to have this good book available to them in the Russian language!  Please pray about this project!
Evangelism:  Our efforts are always aimed at evangelism as well as teaching and establishing Churches.  These are slow works here, it seems.  But I wanted you to know that the Romanian brothers are zealous for the truth and involved in evangelism.  They can do more than I can do and often take literature and visit towns and villages around them.  The 3 baptized brothers in Filiasi are very zealous and have to date visited more than 90 towns and villages distributing gospel literature that we produce and speaking with people about spiritual matters.  Some towns and villages they have visited more than once.  The Word of God has been used by the Holy Spirit to change their lives and while these brothers are busy with all the natural affairs of life, they are serious about evangelism.  Pray for them – their names are Aurel, Virgil, and Nicu.
Winter Theological School:  Winter is definitely over, but the 8 or so men in the east of the country continue to study our course on the doctrine of grace.  They are asking that we come again to meet with them to answer questions and teach them.  Some of them know they need to be baptized and properly organized into a true Church, but we will not push them into this.  We stand ready to help them in any way that we can in these spiritual things.  They are appreciative of your help in keeping them warm as they met this past winter.
I always run out of space before I am finished!  We do want to thank you all for your help.  Perhaps some cannot give to support this work, and some can give more than others.  But many hands make light work and all your financial help is appreciated.  But even more than that, we appreciate and count on your earnest prayers on our behalf!  We know that “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it …” (Psalm 127:1).
    Pray for us here, please!
In the cause of God and truth with you,
    Curtis and Janet Pugh
