PRAYER LETTER FOR MAY, 2002

Wednesday, July 10, 2002
Dear Pastors and Churches:

"Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity Amen" (Ephesians 6:24.)
Our prayer for you is that God's abundant supply of grace be yours! His supply is sufficient for our every need;  known and unknown.
Janet and I are about the same. She struggles with constant dizziness, but is growing stronger otherwise. We are waiting until September or October when she is to have another MRI done to determine if the tumor is growing or not. If it is growing it may be wise to have the radiation treatment;  a specific one-time "gamma knife" type treatment, but there is possible danger of damaging the surrounding tissue if this treatment is given. I am still on medication and am scheduled for intestinal surgery on the I 17th of this month: next Wednesday.
Above all in this letter, we want to express our appreciation to you all for your many cards, letters, e-mails and phone calls and for your generous gifts of money to help defray the cost of my surgery as well as those given towards finishing the renovation of the house. Please accept our "Thank You" as from our hearts. It sound so insignificant, but we do thank you, and praise God for you all.
We have continued with some literature distribution as well as regular preaching in several places since our last prayer letter. My physical condition (weakness) has limited me somewhat, but God has strengthened me greatly and enabled me to stand and preach the Word of God when I thought I could not.
After a service of prayer, singing, Scripture reading and a brief message regarding the 4 qualifications of Scriptural baptism, I baptized Raul into the membership of Berea Baptist Church this past Lord's Day morning. He had wanted to be Scripturally baptized for some time. Our Church had voted to receive him in this fashion because the individual church here that previously immersed him receives some alien immersions and this is contrary to what we believe to be Biblical practice. It was a solemn occasion, but a joyful one! We had to travel some distance;  about 30 miles to the Timis (TEE meesh) River;  to find "much water" and clean water. The first requirement is a Scriptural one as you know, but we also felt it important not to baptize in badly polluted water and the local river here carries away all the raw sewage from two cities.
We expect this act to stir up controversy among some here. That certainly was not our purpose, but Biblical doctrine and Biblical practice always stir up controversy and criticism among people accustomed to liberalism, looseness and mere religious tradition. We know that by this act we are walking in the old path of our Baptist and Ana Baptist forefathers, but more importantly we believe we are walking according to the Word of God. So we wait upon Him to bring forth fruit from obedience to His Word.
Aurel, the other young man who also helps us in written translation work, has traveled by bus to Sweden to help care for a dying uncle. His uncle is presently nearly completely paralyzed. Aurel expects to return to Romania in 3 or 4 months. This uncle made a "submarine" during the days of communism and helped many people escape the harsh communism of Romania by crossing the Danube River. Many of these people are now in the United States, but sad to contemplate, they have forgotten him now in his time of need.
The renovation of the house should be about finished when I am able to return home from the hospital in Budapest, Hungary. (My doctor says I may need to stay in Budapest for 3 weeks, but not all the time in the hospital.) I hope to be in a private or semi-private room;  not in an eighteen bed ward;  this is a possibility! We have gone ahead and started work on the "anexa" to the house. There are two fairly large rooms there which can serve as office and print shop and the old "summer kitchen" can be used to store paper, literature, etc. The "stucco" is almost complete on the mud brick walls of the annex (inside and out). This is necessary to prevent further damage to these "adobe" bricks from the rain. So we hope to be moved in before long.
I see I am about out of space;  again! We praise the Lord for your faithfulness to God and your interested prayers on our behalf and the work here. Your generosity is a testimony to your love for Christ and the Gospel as well as your obedience to Him in the matter of evangelism. "May God mightily bless you all and use you in the furtherance of His kingdom" is our prayer for you.

In the cause of God and truth,
    Curtis and Janet Pugh
