PRAYER LETTER FOR
THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, 2001
Tuesday, November 13,
2001
Dear Pastors and Churches:
Warmest Christian greetings from Romania!
“Brethren,
the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen” (Galatians
6:18).
We
pray this letter finds each of you well and doing well.
I will try to keep this letter short – quite a feat for me! Janet
and I are both well. Since taking the
medication beginning
in October, I am feeling better and have experienced no further problems
as before.
We have been to a
highly recommended eye doctor in Timisoara (an hour's drive away).
This
western trained doctor
believes that prisms will not help Janet's vision problem, so we are waiting
on new
lenses to arrive from
Germany or France. Hopefully they will be here in another week or
two. (Since it took more than three months for a replacement window
for the car to arrive from Amsterdam, our expectations are low.)
There seem to be some changes taking place in Janet's vision. We
do not know the cause. She has lost a bit more vision in her left
eye. She seems to be growing a bit stronger, although she tires very
easily. She continues with the children's work, preparing materials, etc.
We received news last week that Janet's 83-year-old father, who is recovering
from hip surgery, has
a mass in his intestine
that is probably malignant. We ask for your prayers for him.
He is scheduled for
surgery at Baptist
Hospital, Little Rock, on December 6. It is doubtful that we shall
be able to be there for the surgery. We want to be with Dad, but
I do not feel that I should leave Romania at this time, and Janet does
not think she can travel alone even with wheelchair assistance. We
are also aware of the great
expense involved in
making such a trip. We ask for your earnest prayers for Janet's dad
and for Janet and the family at this time.
Raul, our co-worker and translator, and I are scheduled to travel to Oltenia
the last day of November
for a “mini conference.”
That day is a Friday and on that afternoon I am scheduled to teach three
one hour sessions. The conference will continue on the next day,
Saturday, Dec. 1, and I am scheduled to teach three one hour sessions that
morning and 3 one hour sessions again that afternoon. The next day,
Sunday, I am to preach in some churches there – will probably preach 3
or 4 times. Pray for the pastors and others who will attend and for
guidance, and strength (both spiritually and physically) for this “marathon.”
Oltenia is in the south-central part of Romania, is a poorer area than
some, and is a stronghold of the Romanian Orthodox Church, with few Baptists.
It takes about 4 or 5 hours to drive there. The Brethren there have
been receptive to our literature, having received ELECTION, THE TRAIL OF
BLOOD, and a few copies of Pink's SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD. I have been
asked to preach on subjects relating to speaking in tongues, prophecies,
and preservation of the saints. Questions will be allowed.
We rejoice in this opportunity!
At this writing, we have $1,500 in the Risograph fund. We think we
need the machine now, but God
knows what He is doing
and so we wait on Him to supply this need. We do ask that you pray
about this
needed tool, that
God might supply it as He wills, in His time.
Raul and I are making final revisions on THE TRAIL OF BLOOD so it will
be more readable in
Romanian by correcting
some grammar, spelling, etc. This is in preparation for publishing
our second
edition. We
have received requests for more copies of this book – requests that we
cannot at this time fill
because we are out
of copies. One pastor from the capitol city of Bucuresti (Bucharest)
has asked for 500 copies to distribute to the families in his church and
missions and to distribute to others! We have a list of more than
80 pastors toward the north of the country who have NOT received any copies
of either THE TRAIL OF BLOOD or C.D. Cole's book, THE BIBLE DOCTRINE OF
ELECTION. Our desire is to supply these Brethren with these materials
as well as other things as soon as we are able. The tract, BORN AGAIN-ISM,
is at the printers and we are looking forward to receiving it as soon as
he is able to get it done. (This is something we could easily produce
ourselves if we presently had a Risograph.)
The kitchen flooring had to be replaced in our house and our landlord asked
us to leave home for a
few days during October
while everything was torn out. We thought we had to have new passports
as we
were running out of
pages, so we contacted the U.S. Consulate there and made a trip to Bucuresti
during
this time. However,
after we arrived we learned that new passports were not needed, as the
Consulate there was able to insert supplementary pages - at no cost – except
for the trip. The drive from home to the capitol took us 12 hours,
but we did not hurry. We had to spend only one night in Bucuresti
and then traveled on east and north before turning homeward. We took
more than 300 books and other literature with us. We distributed
some ourselves and gave some to others who have volunteered to distribute
these for us. We were able, as well, to give 5 copies each of ELECTION
and THE TRAIL OF BLOOD to the Baptist Institute in Bucuresti for placement
in their library – for use of the students there. May God use these
books and tracts!
Opportunities outnumber available time, strength, and materials!
THANK YOU, heartily, for your
helping us by prayer
and finances as we seek to fill every opportunity to preach, supply sound
literature,
teach, and do whatever
we can to promote the kingdom of Jesus Christ among Romanian speaking people.
Please keep praying for us as our language ability continues to grow.
I am now translating in writing some sermons for publication in the future.
Your helping us as you do is much appreciated! May God bless you!
In the cause of God and truth,
Curtis and Janet Pugh
